| Air Date: 28 Oct 03 Reviewer: J Well, we're back. Jack, Tony, the Prez, Michelle, the Kimster…. even me! Yes, back for another season of babbling commentary about perhaps the best show on television, 24. However, I am not alone in my babbling this year - I think it will be interesting to see how easy it is to tell which reviewer is which. Somehow I don't think anyone will ramble quite as incoherently as me, or stray as far off-topic as I tend to do, or beat things to death as much as I do… oh, okay, you get the point. I'll move on. Here we are, Hour One of Season Three. When last we left our friends, Jack had a serious heart condition (that is, his heart wasn't beating all the time), he had Kate Warner lusting after him, and his young high school dropout daughter Kim getting herself into situations so bizarre that even newspaper columnists were writing articles about Kim's escapades. Her name on one of the popular newsgroups is "Spawn." So let's start with her. Kim is now working for CTU as an analyst. While this is a completely transparent method for the writers to have Kim still be a part of the storyline, I am totally fine with it. It was evident from early on last season that Kim was not integral to last season's crisis (she was central in Season One, but they exceeded the legal number of times a show can have one character be kidnapped and shot at so they were stuck in Season Two). So what happened was the writers continued writing Kim parts in virtually every hour, and eventually she was reduced to befriending Unabomber-like recluses, instigating quickie-mart shootings, and deftly dodging the cougars that prowl Los Angeles county (while caught in a bear-trap of some sort). Anyway, the point is, Kim's new position at CTU should make her more easily weaved into the story. Of course, there are some questions that I'll just throw out there since I can't resist: Why would Jack be okay with his daughter now being at such a dangerous organization? How did the high school dropout get the training for this? According to her profile on Fox's site, she got her GED and then got an Associate's degree. So the gay analyst Adam (he's really supposed to be gay, that's not me being insensitive) might have a point about her getting her job because of daddy. What color panties does she wear to work? Okay, so maybe the last one's not relevant, but I'm a thorough reviewer. Oh, speaking of relevancy… it is me, or is the new dress code for women at CTU a low-cut blouse? Both Kim and Michelle were showing off the goods, and believe me, I'm not complaining, but I would think it's a bit distracting to the men who work there. Random Observation - is it just me, or does Tony look like he's wearing the same clothes from Season Two? I guess we shouldn't expect him to be wearing George Mason's suits, but I kind of expected something. Speaking of Tony and Michelle, could the producers have hit us over the head any more with the following: Tony and Michelle are married - just in case you didn't get that from the camera zooming in on their respective wedding bands. Tony and Jack share power in CTU Los Angeles - I did like how some of the junior staff were playing office politics and going to their bosses bitching about the other. That's an accurate depiction of life in almost any office setting, and it's one of those little things that 24 does so well; they inject the ludicrous, unfathomable situations with doses of reality and humor.
