| Air Date: 13 Jan 04 Reviewer: J Ah, what to say, what to say. I've been trying to not to get disillusioned in my affection for 24, and while it's still my favorite show on television, it's just not reeling me in like it used to. I think at this point, it's living off its past successes. I do enjoy seeing Nina come back and the references to Teri and looking at David Palmer and feeling like I know him. However, I don't like some of the excess filler storylines, the way that some of the goings-on seem a bit recycled, and the fact that, once again, we're going to be subjected to Sherry Palmer. So let's start there, just because I feel like it. Sherry is apparently back. I don't quite understand this. There have been entertainment news articles hailing her return as everyone's favorite villain, or some such crap. I'm honestly curious about how many viewers are actually happy that she's returning. I mean, let's be honest here - she's annoying, she screws things up, and she's not attractive. I know that makes me sound shallow, but the truth of the matter is that TV viewers like sexy female villains. On top of that, why isn't Sherry in prison? She conspired with others in a plot to not only take down the Presidency, but also to detonate a nuke on American soil (two major, unmistakable charges of treason). The only thing I can surmise, and I imagine this will be exposited for us in the next hour, is that Day-vid (as she likes to call him) gave her the ol' Presidential pardon for her role in helping to bring down those responsible at the end of last season. I mean, hell, he came through with his pardon of Nina, so I guess it makes sense that he might pardon the mother of his children and all. So, yes, it's plausible, but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Ah, yes, Nina. We'll go to her next. How many times has Jack had her at gunpoint since she killed his wife? Once at the end of Season One, two or three times in Season Two, and now once in Season Three. At least four opportunities to kill her and he hasn't done it. Now, I know he's had his reasons, but come on. If she were to end up killing him, it'd be his own damn fault (of course, we know that won't happen). Of course, in this episode, she knocks him unconscious with a metal briefcase after Jack stupidly turns his head completely away from her when he hears a sound. Are we to believe Jack's common sense drains out of his penis whenever he's around Nina? Well, perhaps so… he cheated on his wife with her, he couldn't detect that she was a turncoat, he allowed himself to almost get killed by her last season, and now he's gotten himself into another bind with her. Also, it appears that my last shreds of hope about Nina being "good" are gone. Not only did she admit to killing Teri, but she shot one of her own henchies dead simply because an offer of potentially more money was on the table. (Of course, if I want to cling to some hope that she's an undercover agent for another agency, we could assume that she doesn't care about the lives of the henchmen of the "client she represents.") Jack continues to try to convince Nina that he's out on his own and that he wants this big payday and then he wants to "simply disappear." Uh-huh. Fortunately, our dear sweet Nina knows Jack's lying - a refreshing change from the dumbass Salazar brothers who are easily convinced by Jack's fast-talking gringo ways. Nina is astute and remembers things and when she asks "What about Kim?" it actually sounded for a minute like she sounded sincere? Or is that me just making things up again? (I do that sometimes.) Either way, Nina somehow decides that Jack can prove to her that he won't hold the whole killing-his-wife-and-unborn-child thing against her by, well, holding himself against her. I guess if Jack pops a woody while they're making out, she'll know that he's not acting, because, as we all know, we can't control those things, even when we are super-dooper government agents. Seriously, though, what would this making out stuff prove? He said that the money is more important to him than revenge for his wife's death, and he points out that he could have killed her more than once at this point. Nina must at least consider this possibly true, but even if it is, it doesn't mean he wants to freakin' make out with the woman. (I wonder if Nina has ever learned that she killed a fetus, too?)
