| Air Date: 6 Jan 04 Reviewer: J Ah, back at the keyboard after the holiday season. I wish I could say it was relaxing but it never really is, is it? Of course, it's not like I had a kid or anything as one of our other esteemed reviewers did (congrats D!). However, I like to live in my trivial little world and, for me, the last month and a half has been hectic and I'm just glad we've moved into some calmer waters, at least for now. With those calmer, returning-to-life-as-we-know-it waters comes the return of 24. In case you're not up to speed, Chase has essentially become this season's Kim Bauer - that is to say, making poor decisions and generally just being a human monkey wrench to Jack's gears. Wow, that sounds a little dirty, but hey, it's my first review after a little layoff, so we'll go with it. Anyway, Chase went down to Mexico (or New Mexico, depending on when you read the captions - way to know your geography, Surnow) to "rescue" Jack and was promptly captured. If you think about it, it was obviously not hard to find him - sometime in the previous hour Kim herself suggested they look for the flattest non-airstrip in the area, because "that's where he'll land." Well, hell, if Kim can figure his plan out that quickly, then the Salazar henchies probably won't be far behind. So anyway, Chase showed up and immediately believed that his partner had "switched sides" and so he attacked our friend Jack, who used his watch to break his fall into one of the grand pillars in the foyer of the Salazar Estate. (Incidentally, have you ever noticed that drug kingpins always have white tile and cream-colored, large pillars in their foyers? Ah, I'm digressing.) Then, Jack once again "proved" his loyalty to the Salazar's by agreeing to kill Chase, but when he pulled the trigger the gun was empty. Silly Salazar's. All of these little tests, as well as Jack's fast talking in Hour Nine all mean nothing - I mean, I assume he did some radical things to earn your trust in the first place, not the least of which was developing a heroin addiction. So if you were in the Salazar's position, wouldn't you be skeptical regardless of his apparent actions? I mean, wouldn't you just say, "this guy has either crossed us again or crossed his entire nation, so either way he's too risky even for tough guys like us, so let's cap him"? Nahh, you wouldn't say that because he might be able to deliver you a beeeeeelion dollars. Ah, money, the great equalizer. So Jack and Chase are in some deep excrement. As always, Jack begins to formulate a way out of a nearly impossible situation. He finds Clowdia and her collagen lips and says, "Lips, you need to help me and keep Chase alive!" Clowdia's lips agree but not before exploring Jack. Was this the first passionate tongue kiss for a main character on 24? Perhaps not, now that I think about it. There was Kim and Rick in Season One, and then last year's feel-her-up-in-the-hallway-of-the-high-school exchange between Tony and Michelle. But I think this has been Jack's first onscreen slobbering. Speaking of Clowdia, what was up with her distracting a guard, sneaking into the hut where Chase is being held, and then….. doing nothing?? Chase said something intelligent for the first time in a while when she said "Jack will get us out if I help you" and he responded with "So help me." Just cut him down, biotch. What, are you now an expert in tactical maneuvers? No, no, too many men around. Not that I know anything about your training, and never mind the fact that Jack told me to help you escape and you'd be able to get us out. Annoying. And what's the deal with the water-on-the-face thing? Chase is beaten and bloody and damn near unconscious and what does she do? She puts a little room temp water on his face. Ah, yes, that should make him feel a lot better. Perhaps it's holy water that she blessed beforehand. Go on to Page 2 |
