Hour Nine
(4:00 P.M. - 5:00 P.M.)
Review/Commentary
Well let me first start off by saying I think this had the potential to be among the best hours of 24 ever.  I think it succeeded in being a top 10 episode, but I did have some issues with it and, hey, that’s my right as a consumer.

Let me address generally what I liked about the episode:  It was able to touch on everything that has been going on in almost perfectly appropriate amounts.  Beyond the obvious situations, we’re seeing Mason’s health decline, Kim’s love for Megan, Michele’s ambition building, Kate’s situation worsening, etc, etc.  It was an episode that showed us everything at a breakneck speed and it was truly one of those the felt like it left us with very little time to breathe.  At least that’s how I felt; maybe I just need to get to the gym.

One of the parts that I did NOT like again involved Sherry Palmer.  She’s again bickering with Lynne and while I’m sure it’s going to matter to the plot eventually (it better), I found myself instantly saying “I can deal without this” as I watched two fairly unattractive older women get catty with one another.  I mean, is it me or is that one of the most uncomfortable things to witness?  It’s bad enough seeing hot girls on shows like “Elimidate” get nasty with each other, but this pissing contest between Sherry and Lynne, complete with forced “mean” looks is just too much.  It’s like they’re two cheerleaders fighting over the star high school quarterback, only 30 years later.  Okay, I’m dwelling.  I just didn’t like it.

But enough about that.  As for the rest of the episode, I found it thoroughly enjoyable.  I will get to my one other major complaint/inconsistency shortly.

The whole Ron Weiland thread is a curious one.  Why was he released from custody?  And why was it done?  Was it really done by Armus?  Or is someone setting the Prez up to believe it was Armus?  If Armus is involved, I have a mini-theory;  if he is part of this alleged collusion to bring down Palmer’s administration, then he could have done this to let Weiland babble to the press like he is and THEN take him out somehow.  If Weiland is silenced NOW it will make Palmer look awfully bad.  I have a feeling we’ll see this develop very soon, because in reality it wouldn’t take long for the press to spread a story like this and it’s going to have to be dealt with soon.

As for our friend Rayza, it makes sense that he seems to be turning out to be innocent.  We were all set up to believe that he is a dirty boy, and if he truly isn’t, he really should explain his snippy behavior towards Kate.  I know that’ll never happen, but in reality it would have to be explained.  The scene where he and Bob are in the same room and it’s becoming clear that Rayza’s in the dark as much as Bob’s daughters was interesting.  (Incidentally, isn’t it fortunate that the bomb in the morning didn’t damage any of the interrogation rooms, OR the audio/video equipment, OR the structural rigidity of the building itself?  It killed like what?  20 people?  But not the sturdy equipment.)  Anyway, so it’s looking more and more like Bob knows more than he’s letting on.  Especially since Syed Ali knew where he lived and to grab Kate as insurance.

Speaking of Kate, am I the only one who didn’t like the way that scene ended?  Ali kills Kate’s private investigator, Paul, without any remorse, shooting him repeatedly.  However, he then says to his henchman, “If she had known anything, she would have told us.  Kill her.”  Did I hear that correctly?  He has no problem killing a man in cold blood (not to mention nuking an entire city), but he wants someone else to kill Kate?   Does this remind anyone else of Austin Powers?  (“Why don’t you just SHOOT her?”)  Anyway, I had a problem with that.  He could have simply turned and shot Kate, but noooo, that’s not how Hollywood works.  These are the slight suspension of disbelief things that bother me.  Usually, the ultimate bad guy doesn’t do his own dirty work, which is why her orders others to kill people for him (which inevitably fails).  However, in this case, Ali has no problem being a killer?  See my point?  Would you rather I moved on?  Fine.

We’ll stay in the Warner family (briefly) so I can comment on Marie.  She’s still ugly.  It’s not getting any better, Fox.  Please kill her off or make her decide to wear a bag over her hear for the rest of the season – perhaps for the shame of having to cancel the wedding, or better yet, for having family with links to terrorists!!  Ugh.  Her acting was wooden again and her looks of confusion are getting REALLY old.  What could the casting call have been like?

“Alright, we need you to give us some looks; let’s try confused.”
Marie looks confused
“Good, let’s try confused as to why your sister is being sketchy.”
Marie looks confused
“Terrific!  Now, let’s do confused as to why men from the government are here.”
Marie looks confused
“Fantastic!  Now, confused that your fiance may be a terrorist.”
Marie looks confused
“Good, good, I’m feeling you.  Let’s go for confused because your father may be involved.”
Marie looks confused
“You’re hired!  Oh, I forgot to mention, you’ll have to be teary to the point of snot-bubbles for virtually every scene.”

It had to be like that, right?   All she does is play sniffly, whining, hysterical, and confused.  It’s really all the same look.  I’ve made the request before and I’ll make it again:  go away, Marie!  It looks now like she might, although there’s no way I’m lucky enough for it to be permanent.
