Hour Seventeen
(12:00 A.M. - 1:00 A.M.)
Review/Commentary
Well, lots of things to babble about.  But first, before anything else, let me just ask what the hell is going on with the promos for this week's episode??  Was that pop music playing over the promo with Jack and Kate running around relying on each other?  Come on.  You've got to be kidding me.  It appears American Idol is making its move and infiltrating the world of 24.  Actually, wouldn't it be fantastic if there was a second bomb and it was located under the American Idol stage?  Ah, but I digress…

As for Hour Seventeen, I think we definitely saw improvement from the previous hour.  This one actually had some intrigue and the story advanced somewhat.  However, we still had to deal with Kim's very forced storyline and more of Kate's confused looks (evidently, confused looks run in the Warner family).  However, at least Kate is attractive, so that makes it more tolerable.

Random Comment #1 - Michelle got a freeze-frame, name-in-lights, intro!  Whoohoo! Way to go Michelle!  Obviously, it's important that we know who you are.  Just so long as you don't turn out to be another Nina Myers.

So, as usual, we pick up where the last hour left off.  Only this time it felt more exact - like we didn't miss a second.  Other episodes sort of feel like something was missed in the intervening week.  Anyway, I just kept thinking about how Jack has alienated himself from CTU now and he won't be able to count on Tony as an ally anymore.  This is just terrible because Tony HAS been Jack's ally and has helped him out many times before.  I just still don't get why Jack wouldn't fill Tony in, or at least not knock him down.

Speaking of Tony, does this mean he's gonna have to be on crutches for the rest of the season?  Or will his ankle heal in a few hours?  Heh, we shall see I guess.

Anyway, back to Jack and Kate, who we're evidently supposed to be rooting for to get together.  Does anyone believe that Jack's actually turning her over to this coral snake clown?  I didn't think so.  Jack always plans ahead and knows what he's doing.  I have faith.  I just hope I'm right.

Speaking of Jack's resourcefulness, how about his teaming up with Yusuf, the foreign security fella from the unnamed-mysterious-middle-eastern-country that is being blamed for the nuke?  Not bad.  I must say, my opinion of Yusuf has changed - I still don't like how he mouthed off to Tony, but he does seem to be on the level and simply adamant about protecting the interests of his country and his people.  Hey, I can respect that.  Now, if we only knew specifically which country he represents….

Hey, whattya know!  There IS a vice President!!  According to Fox's site, his name is Jim Prescott.  And Jim is evidently just as eager to bomb the hell out of "Mysterious-Unnamed-Country" as the rest of the President's staff.  However, ol' David Palmer is standing fast and waiting on his friend Jack to get him some hard evidence.  This whole "It's too late for second thoughts" mentality is kind of baloney.  The Prez can call back an attack anytime he wants, even if the planes are in the air.  He's the boss, he can do whatever he likes.  So that's just silly.  What does have some credibility is Novick's concern as to what it will do to public opinion and morale.  Just like in reality, if America is attacking, whether it's real or perceived, decisive action is demanded by the public.  If a Prez looks indecisive (like, oh, say, President Carter, for example) the people will speak and get his ass out of there. So there is legitimate precedent for Novick's concern.  However, this is just one more example of Palmer being the kind of Prez we all would like - decisive, but careful and always doing what's right, even when it's not what's popular.  Excellent consistency in the writing for Palmer.

Random Comment #2 - Hey, so who's that guy who called Michelle??  Her friend?  Boyfriend?  Ex?  Who the hell is he?  His name is Danny, evidently, and it's one little ray of light onto why Michelle and Carrie dislike each other - apparently, there's some history there.  And to further prove it, Carrie deletes the call from the record.  Sneeeeaaakkky.  I wonder if Tony is one step ahead of her and is monitoring both of their action.

Random Comment #2(b) - Incidentally, Danny is played by the same actor who was the lead on the sitcom "Hidden Hills" on NBC.  Hidden Hills used to run in the 9:30 timeslot on Tuesday nights, but is now on hiatus and may well be gone completely.  So I guess he wanted to get back on Tuesday nights somehow.  (Oh, and if it ever does come back on, tape it - it's hilarious.)
