Hour Six
(1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.)
Review/Commentary
Well, let me start by saying I hated Sherry Palmer last season, and I don’t anticipate hating her any less this season.  I knew she’d be back, just as Nina would be, but I was far less interested in Penny Johnson Gerald’s character.  She’s conniving and unimpressive, in my opinion.  Most of 24 is difficult to figure out – she is not.  You know her every move is going to be deceitful and she’s often predictable.  So when I saw her name in the credits, I may have groaned slightly.  At least we get to see Palmer make his angry, snarling, hate-filled faces again.  Nothing seems to rile him up quite like his disobedient wife.  (Except maybe for arrogant NSA agents – I wonder how Eric Rayburn is doing in the Secret Service torture chamber.)

Since I was talking about the credits, I’ve always found it interesting in movies and TV as to who gets the “and” credit.  Sarah Clarke (Nina Myers) got it in this one (after the main characters were introduced) and I assume she will continue to get it.  Last year, of course, Dennis Hopper was credited that way.  Just a cool little nod by the show that we realize the significance of your character.  I know, I’m a dork, but I never denied this.

As for this episode, I have to say I was less impressed overall than I have been with past episodes.  I certainly still was riveted, but I didn’t feel like the plot moved very far.  Now, obviously, an hour isn’t much time in reality, but we’ve been trained to expect amazing leaps in an hour (such as driving from one side of Los Angeles to another).

I did like the scenes between Jack and Nina.  Does anyone believe Jack that he is “emotionless” and just wants her to THINK that he’s homicidal?  I suppose I do only because he’s Jack and he’s a trained assassin.  He knows how to remove emotion from a situation.  I have to think there’s no question he’s going to kill her before the season is over.  I mean, what’s to stop him?  Evidently, there’s not going to be any fallout from killing Goren, the federal freaking witness.  So who’s gonna care if he ices Nina?  It’s going to happen, but probably not for a while.  Possibly not even until next season.  I don’t know Sarah Clarke’s contract status, but that might provide a clue as to how long she’s going to be around.

Speaking of being around, poor Mason.  Nobody even seems to care that he’s dying.  I suppose not many people know.  Maybe when Michele finds out, she’ll place her hand tentatively on his back like she did for Tony.  How comforting.  Your hand.

Mason:  “You know, Michele, I’ll be dead by tomorrow.  I’d rather your hands be elsewhere….”
Michele:  “    “

Okay, the joke I am making there (for those of you who don’t get my admittedly poor humor) is what happened to Michele’s lines?  She didn’t have many this week.  Wait, let me clarify – she had approximately zero lines as far as I could tell.  Maybe I missed something while reaching for a Dorito, but I don’t think so (did you ever notice how silly “Dorito” looks when written in the singular?).

Okay, well there were a couple of looks in this episode that I just had to mention.  The first one that I thought was really good acting was Nina’s look when Jack went back into the interrogation room (which you know she didn’t think would happen after he choked her) and proceeded to fire large holes in the wall behind her head. The way she jumped, the fear on her face, the way her bravado disappeared – all very nicely acted.  Even the way she spouted out the name of her contact – it was very quick and without any hesitation.  It is certainly hard to argue with bullets flying by your head while you’re handcuffed and shackled.

The other look I thought was entertaining and dead-on belonged to my girl Michele.  She might not had any lines, but she looked absolutely shocked at the way Jack was going about things with Nina.  She might also have been a little perplexed at Mason letting Jack do that.  Regardless, nicely done.  I think I have a crush developing on Michele.  Hopefully, she won’t break my heart like Nina did last season.

I guess I have to talk about Sherry Palmer here.  Let’s forget for a minute how she is able to obtain information even the PRESIDENT doesn’t know about simply because a guy in Congress “owes her a favor,” but let me ask this:  How does she know where he is exactly?  And how was she able to get there?  Wouldn’t you think the security would be a bit tight around the NW Ops Center?  Ah, but there’s Sherry chillin’ on the couch like she had her own key.

Over at the Warner household, at least things have developed a little bit.  Sadly, we had to see Marie again.  Not only that, we had to see her crying and kissing Rayza simultaneously.  Ugh.  Barf.  And why is he asking her if she’s okay?  Nothing happened to her.

Marie: “No, honey, I’m not!  That CTU agent over there – the mute one – fondled me while you were in there.”

Puh-leez.
