Go Back to Television

Go Back Home!
Well, I have to say, I wasn't disappointed.  I said last week that I didn't see how they could possibly wrap things up in one hour.  And, to be fair, they didn't wrap up everything (is Lynn Kresge alive?), but they showed us the status of our favorites (Jack, Tony, Michelle, Chappelle, etc, etc.).  And they did it in a non-annoying way.  See, I often worry that 24 will officially "jump the shark" and that it will happen suddenly and abruptly and I'll be watching an episode and just say, "Aw, crap, I can't believe they just did that" and it will completely ruin it for me.  (For those of you too young to know what I mean by "jump the shark," watch Nick at Nite or TV Land until you see the episode of Happy Days where the Fonz is water-skiing -- in his leather jacket, no less -- and literally jumps over a shark in the water.  Heyyyyy!)

However, getting back on point, 24 often worries me that they might go overboard, but they never do.  Sure, things go from bad to worse to downright messy, and sometimes things are resolved with speed that you just can't imagine our government successfully achieving, but hey, that's the magic of television.  Despite the boom in "reality" TV interest, for the most part we watch TV to be taken AWAY from reality.  24 is still far and away the best at this.

Another thought - I just have to gloat a little.  I've been saying all along that there had to be some sort of cliffhanger to this season.  And there was!  Sure, it wasn't exactly as I thought it might be, but the truth is, things are not yet resolved.  Whoever this Max character is on his boat, along with the gray-haired dude who is calmly having breakfast (in LA perhaps, despite the bomb having gone off?), it appears that THEY are the actual masterminds behind this entire scheme.  That's another thing that's great about 24 - whenever you think we've uncovered the truth, there's another layer lying beneath.  Kind of like an onion.  Or a cake, if you've seen Shrek.

Random Comment #1 - Uh, what is Kim doing at the Coliseum at the end?  Wasn't she supposed to "sit tight" at CTU with Kate and wait for her dad?  I realize this isn't the Hollywood ending we all want to see, but who the hell let her loose AGAIN?  Hasn't anyone noticed that when Kim isn't locked in a steel room she managed to get into trouble?  It's a wonder she didn't cause Kate to crash into a truck filled with explosives that then somehow falls into the San Andreas fault, thus causing a 9.3 scale earthquake.

Well, let's address each of our friends in 24-land who we've come to know (or know more) over the last "day."  For one, Jack is alive, although he's got some serious heart issues.  Will he be involved in Season Three as much as this season?  Of course.  But it may not happen right away if Season Three picks up right where this one leaves off (more on that later).  Jack's performance at the Coliseum was legendary.  And it's believable because we've seen him like this before and we know he's a former commando.  The entire scene with Kingsley and Sherry was excellent, in my opinion.  I know we're talking about Jack here, but is it just me or is Kingsley just a terrific bad guy?  I mean, the look, the steely eyes, the voice.  It made me a bit scared watching it when he was eyeing Sherry (who was getting nervous lying) and suddenly says "You don't have Hewitt."  It clearly flustered her, and when Kingsley say this and she insisted she did have him, his statement of "Noooo, you don't" was just eerily creepy.  He's just not the guy you want to get caught lying to, you know?  However, he then did the James Bond villain maneuver of ordering his henchmen to kill her.  Had he just pulled out his pistol, he might have gotten her.  But no, he orders his sniper to take her out, but Jack saves the day!  Then Jack just goes to town on Kingsley's men. Why didn't he shoot Kingsley first?  Well, he knew the other guards/henchmen were armed and would be probably more heavily armed that Kingsley himself.  He also wanted to save Sherry's life, as despicable as she is for helping to cause this mess.  In another neat bit of continuity, I found myself wondering why the hell Sherry was clutching her side as she ran away, but then I remembered that she'd be stabbed with a screwdriver just an hour or so earlier, so that probably didn't tickle when she ran.  Of course, if it meant my life I think I'd probably suck it up.  It's not as bad as a bullet would feel ripping through you.
